Probing the dynamic jet-disk connection in M87 during the 2026 EHT campaign

Abstract

Recent EHT imaging of the M87 black hole (BH) has opened a new window for investigating BH astrophysics and testing general relativity. However, accurately distinguishing the properties of accretion and jet physics from spacetime remains a challenge. Our recent GMVA+ALMA observations revealed a jet emerging from a bright emission ring, enhancing our understanding of the ring-like structure surrounding the BH and the jet's origin. Here, we propose new polarization-sensitive GMVA+ALMA observations of M87 to explore the dynamic connection between the ring and the jet. These 3.5mm observations, planned to complement the 2026 EHT 1.3mm movie campaign, will provide spatially resolved total and polarized emission images of the ring-jet complex. This will complement the planned EHT and HSA monitoring efforts to establish a seamless link between the horizon-scale structure and the jet's dynamic evolution. These observations will also extend GMVA time coverage of M87 into 2026, facilitating the study of the long-term variability of the ring and jet. Furthermore, combined with the 1.3 mm imaging, the spectral index and rotation measure will allow us to separate the accretion inflow from the
jet outflow, providing stronger constraints for GRMHD modeling and our understanding of the electromagnetic energy extraction mechanism.
