The black hole shadow in the nearby radio galaxy M87 has been imaged for the first time by the EHT only very recently. This opens up a new era of direct imaging studies of the vicinity of black holes. However, it is still unclear how the powerful M87 jet is launched and accelerated to relativistic speeds. The most important information for understanding these processes can only be extracted by resolving the jet base. This is now achievable with GMVA+ALMA observations. Here we propose new GMVA+ALMA observations of M87 for two VLBI epochs over a time interval of approx. 5 days, aiming at investigating 1) the origin of the jet either launched directly from the spinning black hole or from the inner part of the accretion disk, 2) the jet magnetic field structure to test the magnetic jet acceleration model, and 3) the evolution of the jet base on short (weekly) and long (yearly) timescales, which will provide additional, independent constraints on the jet launching mechanism and the black hole spin. Our proposed observations will complement the planned 1.3 mm VLBI observations with the EHT in 2021 to complete the picture of jet launching in M87.
