Imaging Magnetic Acceleration and Collimation of M87 Jet at Scales of 7-150Rs

Abstract

Understanding the processes of jet formation in supermassive black holes (SMBH) is a central quest in astrophysics. The radio galaxy M87 contains the nearest/largest active SMBH, offering the best opportunity for probing the jet-production site. Here we propose an ultra-deep GMVA observation of M87 along with the large EHT campaign planned in April 2019. While the EHT is sensitive to the emission near SMBH, the GMVA allows us to image the scales of initial jet collimation/acceleration, bridging the gap between the SMBH and large-scale jet. By pairing the 2018/2019 campaign data, we aim to: (1) obtain firm evidence for the persistence of magnetic-field configuration in the initial jet acceleration region; (2) probe dynamic jet structures in the regions generating active magnetized knots; and (3) deeply image a recently-discovered novel jet feature that may offer evidence for a Blandford&Znajek jet. These are critical to test whether the highly-magnetized BH-powered scenario plays a dominant role or not in producing a powerful jet. We plan to add the Greenland Telescope(+LMT if possible), which will greatly enhance the N-S resolution/uv-coverage, thus make the 2019 GMVA data unique. The 3mm data would also be crucial to help calibrate and interpret the corresponding EHT 1mm data.
