SZ Cavities and Shocks in ACT-CL J0930: A high-z cluster case study

Abstract

We propose a high-resolution imaging campaign targeting the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in the exceptional galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0930+0615, located at a z=1.28. Initial MUSTANG-2 observations reveal striking features, including merger-driven shock fronts, AGN-driven "SZ cavities," and an elongated ICM morphology. By tripling the sensitivity of previous observations, this program aims to confirm these structures and enable a detailed analysis of the underlying physical processes. Combined with complementary datasets, including MeerKAT radio, archival Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations, and low-resolution SZ data from ACT, this study will provide an in-depth study of the interaction between thermal and non-thermal components in this massive yet still forming system. Our work will yield critical insights into shock heating, particle (re)acceleration, and turbulence, offering a deeper understanding of the thermalization of the Universe during a pivotal epoch of structure formation.
