Follow up Observations of a Filament in the Galactic Bar Dust Lanes

Abstract

Our team was recently awarded 17 hours on the GBT to observe a pilot region at the midpoint location of the Milky Way Galactic Bar dust lanes (M4.7-0.8). This region contains gas and dust that is accreting into the Galactic Center in the next ~10Myr. These observations showed the denser cloud cores are colder and more turbulent than the surrounding gas indicating the cloud could be externally heated. In the TAC report from our previous proposal, the TAC recommended that we publish the results of the pilot study before requesting any follow-up observations of the Dust Lanes. - We intend to submit our paper on this region before submitting a proposal for wider coverage of the region in time for the 23A proposal deadline (August 2022). However, the main 'hub', which we have observed, shows tantalising indications that emission extends from this hub along a filament towards the Galactic center. Fully exploring this region and its dynamics would significantly improve our overall analysis and allow for a more comprehensive overview of this fascinating region. We therefore request DDT observations of ~11 hr to map this filamentary extension so that we may include the data in our forthcoming publication.
