HI-MaNGA: HI Followup for MaNGA Galaxies

Abstract

This filler proposal is aimed at completing our programme to obtain HI single dish observations for as many of the galaxies observed in the MaNGA survey (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory; part of SDSS-IV) as possible. This work makes an ideal filler proposal for GBT time, as galaxies which have been observed by MaNGA are spread across the Northern skies. Knowledge of the total HI content of these galaxies will provide a unique contribution to many of the science cases MaNGA was designed to address, and the HI-MaNGA program has already made valuable contributions to projects within and outside the MaNGA collaboration. These data also help to inform decisions about targets for future spatially resolved HI followup. We request 309 hours to observe 769 galaxies, completing the HI-MaNGA survey to observe all z<0.05 MaNGA galaxies lacking HI data from other sources. We plan to make all reduced data public through the SDSS system and our GBO survey page to benefit to the entire extragalactic community; the second data release containing 2135 GBT observations has recently been publicly released.
