HI-MaNGA: HI Followup for MaNGA Galaxies

Abstract

This filler proposal is aimed at obtaining HI single dish observations for as many of the galaxies observed in the first two years of the MaNGA survey (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory; part of SDSS-IV) as possible. This work makes an ideal filler proposal for GBT time, as galaxies which have been observed by MaNGA are spread right across the Northern skies. Knowledge of the total HI content of these galaxies will provide a unique contribution to many of the science cases MaNGA was designed to address, as well as helping to inform decisions about targets for future spatially resolved HI followup. The first year of MaNGA data were made public through the SDSS system on 31st July 2016, and year two data (plus maps of derived properties) will be released on 1st Aug 2017. We intend to make the reduced HI data of MaNGA galaxies public through the same system to create a value added catalogue of benefit to the entire extragalactic community.
